Manufacturing in the Midwest is Making a Comeback

By this point, we’re all pretty familiar with a standard narrative surrounding Midwestern manufacturing: though the region was once the industrial heartland of the country, the times have changed, and economic hardship has fallen upon many “rust belt” cities.  This was never an entirely accurate portrayal of the situation–even though manufacturing did decline since its peak in 1979, the Midwest still boasted well over 11 million manufacturing jobs.  Additionally, the region has been able to diversify, and some cities have even experienced an overall growth.  Perhaps most importantly, however, is the exciting fact that–for the first time in decades–manufacturing itself is now booming in the Midwest.  Ever since the end of the great recession in 2009, manufacturing in the Midwest has created hundreds of thousands of new jobs every year.  Even more impressively, this growth has outpaced manufacturing across the rest of the country by more than double.  In short, Midwestern manufacturing is going much stronger than many people give it credit for.
