Robots and Manufacturing

Robots and Manufacturing are Becoming Like PB&J, a Staple.

Robots and manufacturing isn’t anything new, other countries have been using the technologies in symmetry for decades now.  The first programmable robot hit the scene in 1954 thanks to another brilliant American inventor, entrepreneur, and manufacturing aficionado, George Devol. Mr. Devol described his robot patent as Universal Automation.

It’ll be interesting in the coming years to see how the workforce is affected by the marriage of these industries, especially in the United States.

robots and manufcturing - Televox and creator R. J. Wensley, 1928
Photo of R. J. Wensley and Televox, the first mechanical man who could perform useful duties. Wensley and his employer, Westinghouse, built the robot. Televox could turn on a fan, unveil a picture, power a vacuum cleaner, etc. The photo was taken just before Televox was introduced to the public in 1928.

In more recent years the U.S. has dramatically increased its implementation and dollars spent implementing the new technologies for a more efficient and lean environment. We’ve also seen some really cool robots manufactured right here in the U.S. and it looks like robots and manufacturing are here to stay.

How have robots changed manufacturing?

Break things down to the original Latin and the term “manufacturing” is literally a matter of using your hands to make things. These days, those hands often aren’t human. So how are robots remaking our world?
