Nice graphical representation of the U.S. Manufacturing industry. The Total Manufacturing numbers for the U.S. have had a 127.10% gain since 1980, fantastic!

Yes, the face of the U. S. manufacturing industry continues to change but the strength of U.S. Manufacturing remains steady.

With the onset of advanced technology, robotics innovation and lean principles being implemented across all sectors there isn’t one specific internal inflections into the industries that has had the greatest influence on the strength of the U.S. manufacturing sectors.  There maybe outside inflections that have contributed to the rapid reshaping of the industries and sectors as we have known them but the strength, 127.10% gain in the last 35 years, proves a consistent 3.63% annual gain.

The top seven (7) industry gains by NAICS are:

  1. 334 – Computer & Electronics Products 5604.10%
  2. 326 – Plastics & Rubber Products 159.70%
  3. 339 – Misc. Manufacturing 158.40%
  4. 336 – Transportation Equipment 117.00%
  5. 325 – Chemicals 72.00%
  6. 311 – Food 62.30%
  7. 333 – Machinery Manufacturing 41.20%

The bottom four (4) industry gains by NAICS are:

  1. 313-316 – Textiles & Apparel -34.50%
  2. 312 – Beverage & Tobacco – 9.00%
  3. 331 – Primary Metals -6.00%
  4. 322 – Paper 6.80%
