{"id":1376,"date":"2019-11-11T07:27:17","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T15:27:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smartermanager.com\/blog\/?p=1376"},"modified":"2019-11-10T04:58:11","modified_gmt":"2019-11-10T12:58:11","slug":"a-future-for-veterans-in-manufacturing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smartermanager.com\/blog\/a-future-for-veterans-in-manufacturing\/","title":{"rendered":"A FUTURE FOR VETERANS IN MANUFACTURING"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tags:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mfgday.com\/tags\/veterans\" class=\"broken_link\">veterans<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mfgday.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/adaptive\/public\/Veteran_Manufacturer_0.jpg?w=1140&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many veterans of the armed forces have developed skills in the service that extend way beyond their military careers \u2014 and that make them great potential manufacturers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Recognizing this opportunity for veterans and employers, the Manufacturing Institute and \u201ca coalition of manufacturing companies and community and technical colleges committed to recruiting, training, and retaining veterans in long-term careers in advanced manufacturing and other disciplines\u201d have started a great program called&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fasttrackforheroes.org\/industry\/manufacturing\" target=\"_blank\">Get Skills to Work<\/a>&nbsp;(GSTW).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>So far, GSTW has provided more than 100,000 veterans with access to resources and training that have helped them prepare for and enter into advanced manufacturing careers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3zEACd9IA1k\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Are Veterans Such Great Manufactures?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Manufacturing Institute\u2019s publication&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.themanufacturinginstitute.org\/Initiatives\/Military-and-Veterans\/~\/media\/3A3DE69A20884F17A15945583F76E8B3.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">\u201cFrom Military Front Lines to Manufacturing Front Lines: Veterans and Your Workforce,\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;ex-military personnel make excellent manufacturing workers because:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>They Accelerate the Learning Curve \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;Veterans have the proven ability to learn new skills and concepts. Many will enter a manufacturing workplace with transferable skills.<\/li><li><strong>They Are Proven Leaders \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;The military trains people to lead by example.<\/li><li><strong>They Practice Teamwork \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;Veterans understand how teamwork grows out of a responsibility to one\u2019s colleagues.<\/li><li><strong>They Promote Diversity and Inclusion \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;Veterans have learned to work side by side with individuals from all walks of life.<\/li><li><strong>They Perform Well Under Pressure \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;Veterans understand the rigors of tight schedules and how to work with limited resources. They know how to accomplish priorities on time, in spite of tremendous stress.<\/li><li><strong>They Have Respect for Procedures \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;Veterans value accountability, understanding how and why policies and procedures are important to an organization.<\/li><li><strong>They Are Attuned to Global and Technological Trends \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;Many veterans have learned about international and technical trends pertinent to business and industry.<\/li><li><strong>They Have Integrity \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;Veterans know what it means to do \u201can honest day\u2019s work.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>They Are Conscious of Health and Safety Standards \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;Veterans are used to abiding by health and safety protocols to protect themselves, as well as the welfare of those around them.<\/li><li><strong>They Are Triumphant in the Face of Adversity \u2014<\/strong>&nbsp;Veterans have likely proven their mettle in mission-critical situations demanding endurance, stamina, and flexibility. In short, veterans possess admirable qualities that will make them great manufacturers \u2014 and ideal employees.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Can Veterans Go to Learn More About Manufacturing Careers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fasttrackforheroes.org\/industry\/manufacturing\" target=\"_blank\">GSTW site<\/a>&nbsp;includes useful statistics about manufacturing careers that will help veterans determine if a manufacturing career is right for them.<br>For those who need additional training and want to take it a step further, the site also features links to a number of certification programs offered through organizations such as the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC), the Manufacturing Skills Institute (MSI), and the American Welding Society (AWS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>You can also&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.themanufacturinginstitute.org\/Initiatives\/Military-and-Veterans\/Schools-and-Training\/GSTW-Education-Partners.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"broken_link\">visit this page on the Manufacturing Institute\u2019s website to see a complete list of the community and technical colleges<\/a>&nbsp;involved in the GSTW program. These schools all have programs devoted to helping students learn skills that will prepare them for manufacturing careers.<br>And if you\u2019re a vet ready to find a manufacturing job in your area, the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fasttrackforheroes.org\/industry\/manufacturing\" target=\"_blank\">GSTW site<\/a>&nbsp;has a searchable database of tens of thousands of open manufacturing jobs in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can Manufacturers Recruit Veterans?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One place to start recruiting veterans is military career fairs. There are dozens that happen across the U.S. throughout the year. Here is&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vets.gov\/employment\/job-seekers\/career-fairs\/\" target=\"_blank\">a list of career fairs from Veterans Affairs<\/a>&nbsp;to get you started, although it is by no means comprehensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Another option is to use the GSTW job board to advertise your hiring opportunity.
